Stage 9: Bogawantalawa to Dayagama – A Journey Through Valleys and Tea Estates

Embark on a moderate 16.46km hike on Stage 9 of the Pekoe Trail, traversing from Bogawantalawa to Dayagama. This stage takes you through the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, showcasing its diverse landscapes, from renowned tea estates to secluded valleys.

Your trek begins in Bogawantalawa, the town that lends its name to the entire valley. This valley is home to legendary tea estates like Norwood and Kew, all nestled amidst mist-shrouded mountains and emerald landscapes.

The trail leads you past the Bogawana Tea Factory, a relic of the colonial era. As you continue, you’ll encounter “Jacob’s Ladder,” a rocky mountain pass that feels like a portal to another world. The landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation, transitioning from meticulously cultivated tea plantations to pristine grasslands. The stage also takes you past the valley’s two dairy farms, Manik Palama and Bopaththalawa Farm. A highlight of this stage is the rewarding walk along a forest track enveloped by towering eucalyptus trees. This path eventually leads you to Dayagama, a small village nestled in the Agarapatana Valley, one of the most remote and inaccessible valleys in the tea country, marking the end of Stage 9.
