Stage 7: Kotagala to Norwood – A Gentle Ramble Through Tea Country’s Heart

Enjoy an easy 16.28km walk on Stage 7 of the Pekoe Trail, traversing from Kotagala to Norwood. This stage immerses you in the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, offering a gentle ramble through rolling hills, past historic landmarks, and alongside picturesque reservoirs.

Your trek begins in Kotagala, deep within Sri Lanka’s renowned tea region. The trail meanders past the iconic Chrysler’s Farm Tea Factory, a colonial-era gem built in 1870. Its distinctive bright blue roof stands in striking contrast to the surrounding emerald green tea bushes, making it a memorable sight.

Highlights of Stage 7:

  • Chrysler’s Farm Tea Factory: Explore this historic tea factory, a relic of the colonial era.
  • Singamalai Lake: Discover this serene lake, the source of drinking water for Hatton and surrounding villages, and a perfect spot for a picnic.
  • Hatton Town Views: Enjoy panoramic views of the hill town of Hatton from a vantage point along the trail.
  • Castlereigh Reservoir: Catch glimpses of the shimmering emerald waters of the Castlereigh Reservoir in the Bogawantalawa Valley.
  • Darawella Club: A short stop is recommended at one of Sri Lanka’s oldest planters clubs.
  • Cultural Encounters: Pass by brightly colored line rooms (tea workers’ terraced housing), adorned with both Hindu Kovils and Christian churches, showcasing the diverse cultural landscape.

The trail winds its way through rolling hills covered in tea, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. You’ll traverse along the tops and sides of valleys, passing numerous brightly colored line rooms, providing a glimpse into the lives of tea workers. As you approach the latter part of the trail, you’ll begin a descent, meandering along tea estate paths until you reach the town of Norwood, marking the end of Stage 7.
